With Christmas season just round the corner, Sony is prepping up to meet supply demands by increasing PS5 stock in the UK. As reported by The Sun, one Boeing 747 with PS5 stock has already touched down in UK, and two more shipments are on the way.
Sources have stated that Sony is trying to gear up for the Christmas season with this new but expensive logistics setup. In addition to this, Ampere Analysis research director Piers Harding-Rolls also suggested that while this will ensure better availability across the season, reverting back to the old method of transport will have an adverse effect during early 2022.
“Air freighting goods such a long way is commonly avoided as it’s expensive,” Harding-Rolls says. “But firms can use it to overcome supply chain issues or meet demand at key times of the year as it gets consoles, in this case, from factories to stores much faster. I believe Sony also used air to transport some PS5s during the launch window at the end of 2020. It’s much faster than transporting by sea. Air freighting will help bring forward some stock of consoles but may result in a longer dry patch in early 2022 when reverting back to sea transport.”
Sony seems to be trying pretty hard to meet its projected sales figures for the console. Sony’s projected sales figures for the console are higher than last generation too, though PS5 sales for FY21’s first half were lower than projected. While Sony doesn’t have any ,major first party Holiday releases lined up, the season is, of course, known for high console sales.
